A SIGNED CDV OF ROBERT E. LEE FROM HIS 1869 LAST MEETING WITH GRANT, TAKEN BY MATTHEW BRADY

ROBERT E. LEE (1807-1870). Lee was the most significant Confederate General of the American Civil War.

PS. 2.5” x 3.5”. N.d. [1869-70] N.p.  A carte de visite signed R E Lee. It was taken by famed American portrait photographer Matthew Brady in 1869 during Lee’s last meeting with Ulysses S. Grant, by this point President of the Unites States. This hour-long meeting between the former deadly rivals took place at the White House and was the subject of much later speculation. The backstamp reads “M.B. Brady & Co. National Photographic Portrait Galleries No. 352 Pennsylvania Av. Washington, D.C. & New York”. The carte de visite is in fine condition (although the bottom margin may have been slightly trimmed), matted in cream and housed in a large gold frame.
