JOHN MARSHALL SIGNS EACH BOOK IN HIS THE LIFE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON SET.  THEY ARE INSCRIBED TO CHARLES INGERSOLL, THE SON OF FOUNDING FATHER JARED INGERSOLL

 

JOHN MARSHALL (1755-183).  Marshall was the fourth Chief Justice, serving for thirty-five years.  He oversaw landmark decisions such as Marbury v. MadisonMcCulloch v. Maryland, Gibbons v. Ogden and the Dartmouth College case.

 

CHARLES JARED INGERSOLL (1782-1862).  Ingersoll, the son of Jared Ingersoll, was a Pennsylvanian Congressman and lawyer.

 

SB. 1832. Signed hardcover two volume set of John Marshall’s The Life of George Washington, published by Carey & Lea, Philadelphia, 1832. This is the second edition, “Revised & Corrected by the Author”.  The first volume is inscribed vertically “C J Ingersoll presented by Chief Justice Marshall 10 April 1832” and the second tome is inscribed identically.  Volume I is 460 pages and 42 pages of notes. Volume II has 448 pages and 32 pages of notes.  There are calf leather covers, black leather spine labels, marbled endpapers and endpages.  There is an engraved frontispiece portrait of Washington in Volume I and the ownership label of Edward Ingersoll.  A fine set.
