LADY BIRD JOHNSON (1912- ). Lady Bird Johnson was First Lady, wife of Lyndon Johnson.

PS. 11” x 14”. No date [circa 1981]. No place. An oversized black and white photograph signed “For Catharine La Croix with all good wishes Lady Bird Johnson”. The pose shows her sitting in a chair. It is accompanied by a 1981 letter from the LBJ Library. It is in extremely fine condition.

JACKIE KENNEDY (1929-1994).  Jackie Kennedy was the First Lady from 1961 to 1963.   

 

PS. 14” x 11 ½”. No date [1963]. No place [Washington].  A color portrait of the White House signed Jacqueline Kennedy as First Lady on the lower left margin.  She signed this in November 1963 with the expectation that President Kennedy would autograph the image on the lower right side.  It is matted in light blue and framed to an overall size of 19” x 17”.

THE YEAR BEFORE JACK KENNEDY RAN FOR PRESIDENT, JACKIE KENNEDY SENDS A LETTER TO EVELYN LINCOLN, REQUESTING INTERNATIONAL MAGAZINE SUBSCRIPTIONS

 

JACKIE KENNEDY (1929-1994).  Jackie Kennedy was the First Lady from 1961 to 1963.   

 

AL. 2pg. No date [circa January 1, 1959]. Washington.  An autograph letter by Jackie Kennedy written to noted secretary Evelyn Lincoln.  Writing on her personal letterhead, she penned: “Dear Mrs. Lincoln – these are the English and French magazines we would like subscriptions to.  You can get them from Gordon’s Magazines 32 E. 59th St, N.Y.C., have them sent here and billed to Jack’s office.  Every January will you get us a 6 month subscription to them (except for 2 magazies we get 12 months).  Just keep this list…have to bother to tell you again in Jan.  English Spectator History Today London Times Literary supplement French Connaissance des Arts (12 month subsct) Realities (12 month subscription) Figaro Litteraire Maison et Jardin Paris Match I believe we are already subscribed to Spectator & History Today – so you can just renew them next year.  Many thanks”.  The Jackie signature at the conclusion was clipped, perhaps by Evelyn for an autograph collector.  The letter is beautifully framed to a size of 34” x 25”; there is a color copy of the second page of the letter so that it can be read, as well as a portrait of the First Lady and the original mailing envelope in Jackie’s handwriting.  This letter was sold by Gurnsey’s in 1998.

ANNE LANSKY.  The wife of Meyer Lansky, she married in 1929 and had three children.  They divorced in 1946.

 

DS. 1pg. 8 ¼” x 3 ½”. January 5, 1929. No place.  A check signed Anne Lansky and completely filled out by her; she paid herself $300 in cash.  As she married in 1929 (I could not locate the exact date) and signed with the last name of “Lansky” in early January, this must have been one of the first items she signed after she wed.  The check had punch cancelling and tears and is in good condition.

RUTH  LAW

RUTH LAW (1887-1970).  Law was a pioneering aviatrix.  She bought her first aircraft from Orville Wright in 1912 and earned as much as $9,000 a week for exhibitions. 

 

Photograph. 4 ½” x 2 ¾”. 1917. No place.  A black and white photograph of Law flying her biplane.  Someone wrote on the back “Ruth Law on October 27th, 1917, just rising from the ground.  The building on the left is a regimental infirmary as is the one in the distance.  The ground here is cleared for drilling purposes.  You can see the red cross flag in front of infirmary very distinctly.”  The photograph has a small piece of archival tape on the back and is in fine condition.
