NINETEENTH CENTURY LAWYER AND ACTIVIST RICHARD HENRY DANA JR. SIGNS SPEECHES AND ADDRESSES BY PELEG SPRAGUE, LL.D
RICHARD HENRY DANA JR. (1815-1882). Dana was a Massachusetts lawyer, writer, and abolitionist politician who successfully argued the Prize cases.
PELEG SPRAGUE (1793-1880). Sprague was a United States Representative and Senator from Maine and a United States district judge for the District of Massachusetts.
SB. 486 pgs. 8” x 10”. A book signed by “Rich H Dana Jr.” on the first page and again on the title page and by “P Sprague” in an accompanying autograph letter signed to “Richard H Dana Jr, Esqr” pasted on the second page: “I send you the accompanying volume without intending to impose upon you any obligation to read speeches or addresses upon occasions which have passed by & upon questions which in a great degree are now merely historical. I ask your acceptance of the volume, only as a mask of my personal regard P Sprague”. The book, Speeches and Addresses, By Peleg Sprague, LL.D., was published in 1858 by Boston’s Phillips, Sampson, and Company. It is divided into two parts: “Part I: Speeches in Congress from the Year 1825 to the Year 1833” and “Part II: Speeches and Addresses Not Congressional, Between the Years 1825 and 1853”. Notable texts include several congressional addresses in opposition to Indian Removal, his opposition to nullification, eulogies for Presidents Adams and Jefferson and Daniel Webster, and his 1835 speech celebrating the creation of the Abolition Party. It was likely through his abolitionist activism that he first met Dana. Respectfully to Sprague, this volume of speeches and addresses does have value for relitigating many of the most prominent political debates and characters of the early Nineteenth Century. The binding of the book is loose, and the cover is worn. |
